Religious from the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings gathered on Friday, August 11, 2017, to dedicate a wall to current and future vocations.
A welcome speech was given by Mr. Phil VanDenBrink the new principal of Central Catholic. His speech included a statement from the priest who founded his elementary school, “On the wall of the school, though I did not fully understand as a child, still plays an important role in my life as a principal. ‘The sole of education is the education of the soul.’ We need to value all vocations, but just as we honor students who are outstanding in academics and sports, we need to also honor students who are outstanding in the faith. Those who dedicate themselves to ministry. Catholic education needs three components: mind, body and spirit. Just as there are trophies and photos of students who were outstanding in academics and sports, we need to honor those who listen to the ‘still small voice’ as well.”
Two students, Bryn Anderson and Bre Cook, student body president and vice-president, spoke about the new mission statement of Central and Central’s impact on their lives. “Great Falls Central Catholic High School is committed to fostering a Christ-centered community, academic excellence and service to others.” They spoke of the rigorous classes and the impact the school is having on their faith development.
Sr. Mary Woelkers, Class of 2007, spoke about her path to religious life and the impact Central had on her. She spoke of the support of the community and her continued work in Rome. She works for the religious arm of the Italian military. Her joy of living her vocation was clearly seen as she smiled while speaking about her journey.
Bishop Michael Warfel then blessed the wall with holy water. He dedicated it to the current and future vocations which stem from a firm foundation in the faith and the strength Catholic schools play in the students’ lives.
Fr. Garrett Nelson, Director of Vocations for the diocese, concluded the dedication with a prayer for vocations.
A reception followed with many in attendance. The religious sisters celebrating their jubilee were there for the reception and allowed current students, and perhaps future religious, the opportunity to converse about their vast experiences in service to the Church and people in need. A special thank you to all who made this celebration a success, especially Mrs. Kyla Anderson for her hard work in preparing the refreshments!
